Things to Do in Cyprus
Wine Routes
This is a lovely and tasty way to spend an afternoon or more, investigating small villages and the countryside while sampling the local wines. There are many wine routes in the Republic of Cyprus. Some of the most popular are the Pitsilia Route in the mountains (start: Mesa Geitonia; end: Palodeia), the Laona-Akamas Route on the west coast (Mesogi to Polis Chrysochous), and the Koumandaria Route (Kolossi to Agia Fyla).
Swimming and Water Sports
The Republic of Cyprus has more than 50 Blue Flag beaches. Several of these offer equipment rental for water sports, including snorkeling, diving, sailing, and windsurfing, while others are in quieter areas reserved just for swimming. Most of the beaches on Cyprus are sandy, but there are a few rocky options as well if looking at the underwater wildlife is an important goal for the visitor.
Spa Treatments
Cyprus, with its strong ties to Aphrodite, has a full complement of spas that offer a wide variety of treatments guaranteed to beautify and relax their clients. In fact, the island is seen by some as the quintessential place to spend a spa holiday.
Hiking and Walking
There are a huge number of nature trails around Cyprus, and of course, a walk on the beach is readily accessible as well. Hikers will be pleased with the Troodos Mountains, with their 2000-km elevation and balmy, cool summer weather away from the heat of the coastal areas. Some of the paths wander by small churches protected by UNESCO, and hikers may also catch sight of some local wildlife, especially large birds of prey and mountain sheep. The Akamas Peninsula, on the far northwestern coast of the island, is also a favorite for its variety of flora and its views over the sea.
Golf
While there are only three 18-hole golf courses on Cyprus at the moment (all of which are located in the Paphos area), the country is attempting to become a regional golfing hub. The courses are international standard and offer lessons, practice greens, and clubhouses, as well as organizing open tournaments throughout the year.
Cycling
In addition to having a huge network of bicycle routes that tourists can enjoy, Cyprus is quite popular among more professional mountain bikers for its tournaments. Springtime brings the Cyprus Sunshine Cup, a multi-event competition organized by the Cyprus Cycling Federation that is open to cyclers of any category.
