About Cyprus
Cyprus is a Mediterranean island traditionally occupied by a mix of Turks and Greeks. Aside from Greek and Turkish, English is spoken by many Cypriots, and French and German can be heard frequently as well, especially in the resort areas.
Most of the island of Cyprus is now part of the EU. However, part of the northern area is occupied by Turkey. The island’s ownership has been contested for a very long time. Most flights to Cyprus go to the EU member country part of the island, which is where most of the resorts are, and that government considers entry into its territory from Turkish-occupied Northern Cyprus to be an illegal act.
There are flights from Turkey to Northern Cyprus. The rest of this entry will discuss only the part of Cyprus that belongs to the EU (called the Republic of Cyprus), though many of the non-government-related information is the same for Northern Cyprus.
As of the beginning of 2008, the official currency in the Republic of Cyprus is the euro. No vaccinations are necessary for a trip to Cyprus, and emergency medical care is provided free of charge to all international tourists.
